Especially Californians

Tue Feb 10, 2009, 11:10 PM
No veterinary tax in California, please. CA wants to legislate a 9% tax on all veterinary services, including meds. This is really reprehensible at a time when so much is being done to heighten awareness regarding caring for animals. Veterinarians, whose training and licensing is as rigorous as that of MDs will now have their care taxed as though they were dispensing canned goods. And the cost of surgeries, neutering, etc. is high-an additional 9% will discourage many from giving their pet care.

Please call the governors's office and make it known that balancing the budget at the expense of our pets' health is not acceptable!!! It only takes about 20 seconds because it's all automated. Call 916-445-2841. Then please press 1 - 5 - 1 - 2 .

Press 1 for English. Press 5 for the veterinary tax proposal. It will ask you to press 1 if you're calling about the veterinary tax proposal, so press 1. Then press 2 to oppose the tax.

Seriously, this is no good :[ I already know some people who choose to withold on veterinary care services because of the price; raising taxes on it will only aggravate the issue. It really only takes a couple of seconds to do and you don't even have to talk to a person, so please, call in.

I dont know. Sounds like a good idea too me. If people cant afford a dog/pet then why have one? Only to be sent away to the dog pounds to be killed when they cant afford them anymore. The dog pounds waste money on feeding these pets for a couple of days and then the cost to put them a sleep!!! This tax will give make us Californias think twice about owning a pet. If I was the Governor of California. Only new pet owners pay the 9% tax. Owners who had there pets registered in the county or state before todays date, would not be charged the 9% tax and would be given a "card" when there yearly pet registration comes in.

Did you know he might gonna lay off like 20 thousand state workers cus the budget is all messed up? Well they have to get money from somewere. I hate the DMV already. Imagine when its open 3 days a week!!!!!

Tell me what you think...

The people with no regard for animal welfare will not be daunted at all by these extra charges. To say "You must be able to afford any and all medical expenses or you don't deserve a pet" is kinda harsh. Veterinary expenses can be extreme already, since pets don't typically get insurance. (However, I'm very pleased to be seeing pet insurance become more widespread) So certain emergency procedures are easily out of the question for most middle/lower class households.

My point is, it's kind of unfair to punish people who care enough about their animals to get them routine care, like vaccinations, microchips, and spay/neuter surgeries. And this just makes those "emergency" situations all the more unaffordable.

Lower income families deserve to keep pets too, and I speak from experience. There needs to be programs out there trying to HELP people afford pet care. Many veterinarians sadly are concerned more about how much money they can squeeze out of people than the animals they are supposedly sworn to help.

Ramble ramble. But again, I'm just saying that if people don't care about their pets, they're still not gonna care. People will always get pets they don't need or can't properly care for, rich or poor. What we need to do is make it legal to beat these people half to death when they do.

That's bullshit. Fuckers who thought that shit up should see how it feels to not be able to afford treatment for their loved one (be it animal or human) and THEN see what they think of it.

I neutered my pet for free and plus 20 buxs for medicine this last week. I payed like no more than 100 buxs for vacs "they are also free if you can find it". The chip is free from my local Los Angeles pound. They charge you like 75$ to activate the chip and find your or my missing dog when it gets out. If a dog gets sick I usualy pay the 35 dollar fee for the check up + what ever medicine it needs. But If has some sort of illness that requires thousands of dollars to fix. I'm sorry but I cant really afford that or health care for my pet. I hardly have healthcare myself. So its not too expensive to own a pet. You just have to be resposible.

8% is not alot. Plus if you have insurance for a pet. The insurace should take care of that small cost.

How much do you spend on your pet?

Er, well, honestly I have to say upfront that I am biased against this bill from the get-go, since I'm a pre-vet student.

And no, I don't think it will make people think twice about getting pets. Some people will own animals whether or not they can provide for them. Instead I feel as if this tax would be punishing the good petowners and the veterinarians instead.

Thanks for calling in the end anyways :3

Honestly, I don't think they are thinking of it that way....:/ It is probably just something someone thought of to try to ease the budget crisis and bring in more revenue to the state. I don't believe that they had any truly malicious intent.
